Allied Health Professionals

There are a variety of different health care professionals who contribute to dementia support. These are known Allied Health Professionals (AHP), including Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists.

You may also get support from other AHP services such as Physiotherapists, Dietician, Podiatrists and Paramedics.

Alzheimer Scotland’s website has more information about how AHPs can help people living with dementia and their families.

Occupational Therapists

An Occupational Therapist (OT) supports you to maintain or improve your ability to do everyday activities so you can continue living independently.

They do this by exploring with you what you are finding difficult and identifying practical ways to help you. This could involve looking at assistive technology.

Some OTs specialise in helping people with particular health conditions. The OT who supports you will depend on your individual needs and circumstances.

You may be referred to an Older Adult Mental Health OT if you have been diagnosed with, or are worried you may have, dementia. These OTs have specialist knowledge about dementia. They work as part of the Older Adult Community Mental Health Teams. They can aid in your diagnosis. They can also provide support to maintain or learn new skills which have been affected by your dementia.

Speech and Language Therapists

A Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) can support you and your family by maximising communication skills, so you can maintain your independence and your relationships and continue to be involved in your own care and make decisions about your future.

Support may involve:

  • assessment
  • direct therapy
  • provision of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) methods
  • communication education for others
  • advice about ways to communicate and interact when conversation is difficult

SLTs are also involved in assessing and managing swallowing difficulties in people living with dementia.

If you feel you would benefit from seeing a SLT, please ask your Dementia Outreach Nurse or other Health Care Professional to make a referral.
